With just a handful of games left in the season, the Presidents' Trophy will come down to the final sim of the regular season, with three teams all having a shot at taking home the regular season champion honors. As it stands now, we have:
Calgary at 96 points, with two games remaining (max. 100 pts),
Tampa Bay at 92 points, with four games remaining (max. 100 pts), and
Atlanta at 92 points, with three games remaining (max. 98 pts).
While Calgary enjoys a two-win advantage in points over the other two teams, it is actually Tampa Bay who controls their own destiny. Regulation + OT wins (ROW) is the first tiebreaker in standings. While I'm not completely certain on any remaining tiebreakers after, I believe the next tiebreakers are Wins and Regulation Wins, but luckily, past ROW, the other tiebreakers end with the same result in either order, so it shouldn't matter. With that said, below are the clinching scenarios, as written from Calgary's perspective. If you're pulling for Tampa or Atlanta, it should be easy enough to work backwards to figure out what your team needs to clinch.
Stats heading into Friday, April 16th:
ROW - Calgary 43, Tampa 44, Atlanta 38
W - Calgary 47, Tampa 44, Atlanta 44
RW - Calgary 43, Tampa 42, Atlanta 34
For Calgary to clinch the Presidents' Trophy, they must:
Win both remaining games in regulation or OT (100 pts, 45 ROW, 49 W) AND Tampa wins no more than one game in regulation or OT (max. 100 pts, 45 ROW, 48 W) OR loses one game in any fashion (max. 99 pts)
Win one game in regulation or OT and one in SO (100 pts, 44 ROW, 49 W) AND Tampa wins no games in regulation or OT (max. 100 pts, 44 ROW, 48 W) OR loses one game in any fashion (max. 99 pts)
Win both games in SO (100 pts) AND Tampa loses one game in any fashion (max. 99 pts)
Win one game in regulation or OT and lose one game in OT/SO (99 pts, 44 ROW, 48 W) AND Tampa wins no games in regulation or OT AND loses one game in any fashion (max. 99 pts, 44 ROW, 47 W) OR loses one game in regulation (max. 98 pts) OR loses two games in any fashion (max. 98 pts)
Win one game in SO and lose one game in OT/SO (99 pts) AND Tampa loses two games in any fashion OR one game in regulation (max. 98 pts)
Win one game in regulation or OT and lose one game in regulation (98 pts, 44 ROW, 48 W) AND Tampa wins no games in regulation or OT AND loses one game in regulation (max. 98 pts, 44 ROW, 47 W) OR wins no games in regulation or OT AND loses two games in any fashion (max. 98 pts, 44 ROW, 46 W) OR loses three games in any fashion (max. 97 pts) OR loses two games, with one being in regulation (max. 97 pts)
Win one game in SO and lose one game in regulation OR lose both games in OT/SO (98 pts) AND Tampa loses two games, with one being in regulation (max. 97 pts)
Lose one game in OT/SO and one in regulation (97 pts, 43 ROW) AND Atlanta loses one game in any fashion (max. 97 pts, 40 ROW) AND Tampa loses two games in regulation (max. 96 points) OR loses three games, with one being in regulation (max. 96 pts) OR loses four games in any fashion (max. 96 pts)
Lose both games in regulation (96 pts, 43 ROW) AND Atlanta loses one game in regulation (max. 96 pts, 40 ROW) OR two games in any fashion (max. 96 pts, 40 ROW) AND Tampa loses four games, with one being in regulation (max. 95 pts) OR loses three games, with two being in regulation (max. 95 pts)
We won't see Calgary face-off against either of the teams chasing them, but we do get to see Atlanta battle Tampa Bay in Atlanta's final game and Tampa's penultimate game, which has the chance of deciding who wins the regular season crown.
