Now that the SMJHL regular season has come to a close, let’s take a look at how the West Kendall Platoon draft class of S24 did. The Platoon held 6 draft picks in last season’s SHL entry draft and all 6 returned to their SMJHL clubs for additional training before joining the big club. Without further ado, here is the West Kendall Report, in the order they were drafted by the Platoon.
Damien Wert – LW (Sniper) – Drafted: 2nd STL Goals: 28 (3rd SMJHL) Assists: 26 Points: 54 (1st LW, 5th SMJHL) +/-: 8 PIM: 8 Hits: 20 Shooting Percentage: 16.97% (9th SMJHL) Shots Blocked: 12 Min/Game: 20:24 TPE pre-draft (from McZerhl’s Draft Rankings): 276 TPE pre-S25 playoffs: 350 (38 Banked) = 388 Notes: As Wert is among the league leaders in almost all offensive statistics, he is living up to his 2nd overall selection. He leads the second place Scarecrow squad in Goals, Points, +/- Shooting Percentage, and Scarecrow Forwards in minutes played per game. Look for Wert to become a household name down the line, as he continues to develop. Unless something shocking happens, look for him to be lacing up for the Platoon next season! Anton Fedorov – LW (Sniper) – Drafted:14th STL Goals: 20 (10th SMJHL) Assists: 20 Points: 40 (5th LW, 19th SMJHL) +/-: 2 PIM: 16 Hits: 43 Shooting Percentage: 14.08% Shots Blocked: 6 Min/Game: 15:06 TPE pre-draft (from McZerhl’s Draft Rankings):180 TPE pre-S25 playoffs: 324 Notes: Federov is making quite a bit of noise, and might have had even bigger numbers, if he wasn’t sharing time on a team with the Platoon’s 1st pick, Wert. Federov is 2nd on the ‘Crows in goals and 4th in points. He’s developing well, and if he’s willing to slot over to RW, he could see even more time down the road. With Wert’s Assist totals being almost as high as his Assist numbers (by one), Federov and Wert could form the wings of a dangerous offensive line down the road. He’s pretty likely to be joining Wert on the Platoon’s forward corps next season. Klaus Wagner – D (Offensive D) – Drafted: 19th MTL Goals: 10 Assists: 35 (3rd SMJHL) Points: 45 (4th, Defense, 13th-T SMJHL) +/-: 1 PIM: 25 Hits: 20 Shooting Percentage: 17.54% (7th SMJHL) Shots Blocked: 65 (6th SMJHL) Min/Game: 23:36 (5th SMJHL) TPE pre-draft (from McZerhl’s Draft Rankings):196 TPE pre-S25 playoffs: 332 Notes: Wagner is living up to his billing as an Offensive D-man, appearing among the league leaders in assists and points among D-men, and is in the top 20 points earners in the league. Wagner is also showing that he is a reliable defender, as he is 6th in blocked shots, league-wide. Wagner leads the Impact in Assists, Points, and Fights with 3 (1 won, 2 draws). Wagner is not a true 2 way defender though, as he is seemingly unwilling to take the body with only 19 hits. That being said, he’s seen the most PK time of anyone on the Impact, so his team seems to trust his defensive play to a significant level. He could grow into a solid SHL Blueliner, and as 19 of his 45 points came on the powerplay unit, look for him to possibly quarterback one of WKP’s units down the road. With the Platoon losing a 2nd pair defender to retirement, it seems likely that they will decide to let Wagner develop on the job, instead of sending him down for additional seasoning in juniors. Fife Gibbs – D (Two Way D) – Drafted: 26th VAN Goals: 10 Assists: 22 Points: 32 +/-: -2 PIM: 45 Hits: 58 Shooting Percentage: 23.26% Shots Blocked: 69 (7th SMJHL) Min/Game: 22:06 TPE pre-draft (from McZerhl’s Draft Rankings): 182 TPE pre-S25 playoffs: 305 Notes: Gibbs saw the 4th most minutes on the Whalers, behind McZerhl, Bure, and Uptuck, making him the second most-used defender on their squad. Gibbs came in 7th on the Whalers in points, tied for 6th in goals, and was 6th in assists. Gibbs is significantly more defensively minded than Wagner, and takes the body with far more regularity. He notched as many goals as the offensive minded Wagner, and fits his title of Two-Way Defenseman admirably. If they continue to develop at a similar rate, Wagner and Gibbs could really form a strong defensive tandem down the road, and depending on how long it takes them to develop, Gibbs, Wagner, and Bojo could be the foundation of one of the strongest defensive corps in the SHL. Gibbs game, being a little more complex since he has to focus on his skill set at both ends of the ice so much more, seems likely to benefit from another season in juniors. I’d be unsurprised to see him anchor the Whalers’ blueline for one last season. Naeem Chamas – LW (Sniper) – Drafted: 28th STL Goals: 5 Assists: 4 Points:9 +/-: -8 PIM: 20 Hits: 34 Shooting Percentage: 9.26% Shots Blocked: 2 Min/Game: 8:41 TPE pre-draft (from McZerhl’s Draft Rankings): 223 TPE pre-S25 playoffs: 323 Notes: Chamas season totals are easily explained by the highly limited role he held on the Saint Louis team this season. Despite appearing in all 52 games, he still only played 451 minutes, which is 5th worst on the team. Based on his points per minute, if he had played the same amount of time as teammate Federov, he still would have only tallied about 16 points, as opposed to Federov’s 40, and his 9.26 shooting percentage does not fit his billing as a sniper. Hopefully, Chamas was just in a sophomore slump, and he’ll bounce back next season. Unless his limited ice time is due to conflicts with management or the locker room, Chamas is likely to spend another season down with the Scarecrows. Ryan Woito – D (Offensive D) – Drafted: 37th KEL Goals: 10 Assists: 5 Points: 15 +/-: -1 PIM: 10 Hits: 10 Shooting Percentage: 22.22% Shots Blocked: 23 Min/Game: 9:57 TPE pre-draft (from McZerhl’s Draft Rankings):194 TPE pre-S25 playoffs: 194 Notes: Woito put up decent numbers with the Knights, considering his limited ice time, however, it should also be noted that his development has essentially stalled out. A sure bet to spend at least one, but more likely two more seasons in the minors, and fingers are crossed that he can come back, and get his game up to SHL standards before too long.
